Homecoming Week

This past week Feb. 7-14 marked our Homecoming Week. Since we are not a traditional school and we don’t have a football team (until 2010, we recently signed our first 26 players) we host our homecoming during basketball season. Each day was filled with fun things to do and see.

On Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 9PM was the 90’s Party. It was held in our Student Center Ballroom and was free to GSU students. It was tons of fun. People went out and dressed how they remembered people dressing in the 90’s, Brandon “DJ Bricks” Jackson was the DJ and he played all of the songs we loved from the 90’s including “My Love” by Soul for Real, John B., Jodeci, TLC, Aaliyah among others. The party rocked all night!

On Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 4PM was the Greek Showcase. This was a greek stepshow, where fraternities and sororities competed against each other to show their talents and creativity. It was held in the Sports Arena and cost $10 presale for GSU students and $15 day of the event. It was a wonderful performance. The contestants showed up ready and it was evident while watching. The fraternity winner was the “Ice Cold” brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the sorority winner was the “Lovely” sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

On Monday, February 9, 2009 at 7PM was “Sketch of the Basics”. This was a fashion show put on by Spotlight Programming Board. It was a pretty nice show, hosted by 2 GSU students, Stanton Wicks and Denitra Gober. Some of the show had outfits from the 90’s, and Dancers on Pointe performed twice. DOP is a hip hop dance group.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 11AM was the carnival. There was a street carnival that had tons of different things to do. My favorite was the cotton candy :~D I have a sweet tooth. There was also a greek stroll off. Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc took this for the ladies and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. took it for the men. It was again FREE!!

On Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 7PM was Amateur Night and Talent Show. It was held in the Student Center Ballroom and was filled to capacity. The show was amazing there were 3 categories and 3 winners. Roy won by singing the judges away while playing his guitar, Peerless Perfection won for the third year in a row since being created and the other person who won was

On Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 12:15PM was the golf cart parade and Spirit Day. The Admissions Office (www.gsu.edu/admissions) with the Welcome Center won the best golf cart award. We were the most excited and have the best staff hands down (this may be a little biased).

On Friday, February 13, 2009 at 8PM was the Coronation & Ball. This is were everyone got dressed up. MAsquerade masks were suggested and worn. It was a great idea in my opinion. Our homecoming court was announced and is as follows…….
Miss Freshman Jessica L.
Mr. Freshman Christian Henley
Miss Sophomore Latoya Raines
Mr. Sophomore Matthew Reed
Miss Junior Tavaya Davis
Mr. Junior Greg Jarvis
Miss Senior Jessica James
Mr. Senior Terrance Rogers
Homecoming Queen Jessica Tipton
Homecoming King Roy Woods
Congratulations to you all on a job well done!!

On Saturday, February 14, 2009 Valentine’s Day was the Tailgate and Basketball Game. The tailgate was hosted by Student Government Association (www.gsu.edu/sga). It was a great event with live music, student organizations setup to tell students about themselves, there was free food and it was an overall good atmosphere. We won the game vs UNC Wilmington.

All in All it was a great Homecoming Week!! With this being my last homecoming it was definitely one to remember.

I know you’re wondering what I did soooo…On Valentines Day I showered myself with gifts! I went to the Spa for a much needed massage and I went shopping. Also, so that my best friends and her fiancee could go out I babysat my godson Christian. It was so much fun! We made candy, played hide and seek, and we watched movies. My daddy sent me a box of chocolate covered fruit and that was a pleasant surprise. Valentines Day is a great day but be sure that you feel like a queen everyday! I know I do!

Winter Break

Winter Break was by far the best and most anticipated break for me thus far!

I was so overwhelmed and needed a break! I ended the semester with good grades and a high spirit. There were many things to do during the break before I left and I enjoyed them all.

I went to a Men’s Basketball game and worked the Suite for Panther Core members. My sister Liberty came to visit me again! We had tons of fun together, we went and visited MLK Jr’s national historic site as well as his birth home. I also went to volunteer at St. Francis Soup Kitchen along with my sister. We went and walked through Centennial Olympic Park to look at the decorations and also to ice skate.

I shopped at Atlantic Station and I caught a couple of movies that I wanted to see during the break, like “Cadallic Records”, “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, “Gran Torino”, “Seven Pounds”, and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. These were all fantastic movies!

Atlantic Station

Atlantic Station is an area of retail, restaurant, office, residential and hotel space. There are stores such as Dillards, Guess, Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, H & M, and Victoria Secrets among others. You can access it from riding Marta, which is our public transit system or by driving, either way it is less than 7 minutes away from main campus.

I went to Texas to visit my father and brother and it was really fun! I was able to enjoy family time while getting a break from school.I was in Dallas, Tx from 12/23 - 1/4.

I had a great break if I do say so myself.

Thanksgiving Break

My thanksgiving break was AMAzing! I had so much fun! My sister came in from Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and stayed until Sunday, Nov. 30.

In this time we did so much! We stayed in the dorms instead of going to stay in Covington. We went sightseeing throughout Downtown Atlanta, we went shopping at Atlantic Station, Lenox and Cumberland, we rode the Marta because during the holidays it’s the most efficient mode of transportation, we ate well on Thanksgiving day and the days following, and we enjoyed the holiday together.

I love thanksgiving because it creates a break for family. It’s a time where everyone comes together to eat, be thankful and relax. This year was different for me than years past, I spent time with my boyfriend and his family on Thanksgiving instead of solely spending time with my own family. It showed me how different everyone’s experiences on holidays can be. His entire family came together including aunts, uncles, and cousins. There was an inflatable bouncer and the kids were more than happy. I even took a turn inside of it ;-D.

All in All the break was much needed and I enjoyed every minute of it. Unfortunately it’s back to classes, finals, and then on to the Christmas break! YAY!

Until then I will be studying, FAITHFULLY! I came to get a quality education and I have to end the semester strong….

Breakkkkkkk!!!

Hello Everyone,
I am uber excited! Why, you ask?! It is finally Thanksgiving break. Which means for me: no school, no work, no phone, no television, no cars or expressway, basically I’ll be on a mini vacation. I’m staying in the state this go round but I will be celebrating the holiday with my loved ones. The most exciting part is that my sister is coming to visit me from Michigan!!! I haven’t seen her since this summer and that is a long time for us.

Enough about us, I’m sure you’re expecting GSU to be shut down but it won’t be until Thursday. The last day of classes was today and offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday only. We will still be giving tours so if you want one you should schedule one soon, like NOW! A lot of offices will still be open such as Admissions, the One Stop Shop (registrar), and Student Advisement, among others.

One thing before I go…..If you’ve been following the news you learned that the University has selected our new President Mark Becker will begin his term as our new president beginning in 2009. We are really excited about this new venture and can’t wait to see what he does to further improve the university. When asked what he would bring to GSU he responded ” energy, a passion for and a commitment to public higher education as well as significant academic leadership experience in both established and up and coming public research universities.” (as taken from http://www.gsu.edu/presidentbecker/27024.html) please go to the link above to learn more about him!

What are you doing for the holidays? Whatever it is be safe, comfortable and with those you love because that’s what the holidays are for to cherish moments with your family and friends.

A look at my summer

Hello guys,
This semester is off to a GREAT start!! This summer I traveled, studied, worked, and enjoyed the weather. For those of you who read my previous blog, you know that I attend school year round. I am always in classes, the library (which by the way looks AmAzInG), at work, or in the SGA office! I was ready for a break from the books. Whew, refreshing. So now that the breaks over, which by the way was only two weeks for me to relax and get myself situated, I am back in school and gearing up for a 4.0 semester. What does that mean? I will be attempting to earn all A’s this semester. I will give you a run down of my schedule so far.

I am the Vice President of Student Life for the Student Government Association.

On August 7, I have a training that I must attend for a student leadership program that I’m apart of called the LEAD Team.

What is the LEAD Team you ask?
The LEAD TEAM is a peer student leadership program at GSU. As ambassadors for Leadership, our mission is to provide leadership opportunities for the student body and student organizations of GSU. Our major projects are leadership workshops and speakers series throughout the year, we also host GSU’s annual Leadership Conclave each fall. The team also acts as leadership mentors to student organizations and campus offices. We are apart of the Student Life and Leadership Office.

On August 8, I have work training for the Welcome Center.

iLead, now what do you do?

Leadership Conclave was held Saturday, October 18, 2008. It was our 65th time hosting is. It was a great event. Ron Clark was our keynote speaker. If you’re unfamiliar with Ron Clark you should definitely do some research. He was featured on “Opera,” and he founded the Ron Clark academy.

Ron is from a small town in North Carolina which he leaves to teach in a New York City public school. The class he taught was regarded as incapable of doing more and being more. He would not settle for that, he began to show his students what they could accomplish and in the end, his class received the highest average in the state. That’s a brief look at him, please do more research because he is a phenomenal speaker.
Here is a picture of him during his speech. Ron Clark

After a keynote speaker as great as Ron Clark, students began going to different sessions that we hosted throughout the event according to the tracks they selected under the iLead theme. Here are people interacting at the conference People at the conference

Leadership Conclave was concluded with great prizes, four ipods were given away!!! Here is one….Winner

This event was great! Once you come to GSU you should attend.

Leadership

I am apart of the LEAD Team here at Georgia State and we are about to host our annual Leadership Conclave.
Leadership Conclave is for current students who would like to enhance their leadership skills and evolve as a leader on campus. Any student leader is welcome.
I am really excited about this event. I can’t wait to here the responses we receive from people who attend.
iLead
The main thing I stress is STUDENT INVOLVEMENT!!! Get involved, not matter where you go. Your college experience is going to be what you make it so make it worthwhile! :-)

So summer has begun and I am attending Maymester classes. Maymester is apart of Summer semester it is just termed as “Maymester” because it is a three week long semester. You receive all of the credits that you would normally receive in a really short amount of time. To say the lease I’m doing good. I am exhausted because I have two classes, work, a commute, and homework, :-D but honestly it is all worth it. I am not one who enjoys 16 week semesters just because by the 8th week I am kind of tired of the same routine so this is a great opportunity for me.

Schooooool’s OUT for Summer….or until May 12

Alrighty guys……..so I’m out!!!! YAY!!! I’m really excited about this although I have to return on Monday, May 12, 2008 :-( . Anywho, This year has been really different from my sophomore year. I have met tons of cool people, a lot of my friends have crossed over into Greekdom, and I have excelled in my academics if I do say so myself. We took finals last week and this monday. My finals went pretty well. I aced two of them and I did well on the others. So kudos to me…lol

My so called Life

Okay so this semester has been hectic but I was finally able to relieve some stress. We just had our Spring Break!!!!!!! It was great. It began on the weekend before and continued until the next weekend. I hung out with friends, did a little traveling and I slept! YAY! I visited a few friends in Athens, GA. They weren’t on their break yet so I was able to hang with everyone. Ok, so my life is a bit different since my last blog. I am now the Vice President of Student Life for the Student Government Association, and how exciting that is! I am really amped about this position. I am able to speak on behalf of the student body and work at changing issues that we have on campus. Although, Georgia State is really changing as a campus the students’ concerns are still the same and now I can change the issues they have. I am also still very active in my other organizations. SGA is really my life right now!! So I am at school on most days from 10am - 6pm, its long but well worth it. I am currently creating events for our 2nd annual PAWS on Atlanta Day, which is a day where GSU students go out into the community and give their time and manual labor. Something else I am doing is vying for the position of Programs Chair for Circle K International which is a service organization, I LOVE giving back! Hopefully, I’ll get the position because I have some GREAT ideas for a few programs I want to have. I would also like to become a LEAD TEAM member. It is an organization that teaches leadership skills. They throw leadership seminars, conferences, and forums.

I’m back….

So I’m finally back!!! School has been in session for a week and I am overwhelmed!! I’m tired since I was able to sleep in over the break and now I have to get back into the habit of waking up early to listen to lectures and to go to work, it’s hard but I’m doing it. My holiday break was great!! I was able to spend time with my extended family in Texas. I was there for about a week. My oldest brother came home for the break as well, he’s in the ARMY!!! I was thrilled to see him. We brought in the new year as a family. I made a New Year’s resolution like I’m sure everyone else did, well actually I made a few :o here they are: 1.) Lose the fifteen extra pounds that I’ve gained 2.) Go to class everyday and on time 3.) Make Straight A’s this semester and finally 4.) Enjoy the semester! The toughest resolution hands down will be #2. My earliest class is at 10am and I only go three days a week so you’d figure that would be easy, but it’s not! I am sure I will do it though! So far I’ve done well! #3 Will be the second hardest since in order to make straight A’s you must attend classes daily, take notes, pay attention, and be self motivated to do so. #1. Will be the other struggle for me since I don’t know when I like to workout and I don’t like working out. #4. Will by far be the easiest thing I have to do this semester! I enjoy being here and that allows me to have fun. I’m sure you’ve made resolutions as well, one of those should have been to apply and get accepted into Georgia State University because once you get here you won’t want to leave. There are over 250 student organizations, which translates to “There is so much to do!” I, myself, am apart of 6 organizations, I am a mentor, I am a blogger of course, I am a basketball manager, and I am a member of the Student Government Association! To say the least I am very involved. I am involved in all of these extra-curricular activities, and I strive for my academics and yet I still find time to have fun, whether it be hanging out with friends, writing poetry, spending time with my family or just lounging in my room. There is always something to do on campus.

Why Georgia State University?

My name is Terkquyose Kennebrew. I graduated from high school in May 2006. While still a senior in high school, I began to contemplate which college I wanted to attend. My parents are both college graduates but neither of them were able to obtain the full college experience; meaning neither of them lived on campus or participated heavily in clubs and organizations. I narrowed my choices down to four colleges: Georgia State University, VSU, UGA, and FVSU. I began looking at each institution for numerous reasons but as you can see I ultimately chose Georgia State University! I am a sophomore here at Georgia State University.
Georgia State was my school of choice because of three different reasons, the living space, diversity, and the location. My parents were behind me 100%. My mom especially liked it because it was in Georgia, which is where she lives, I received the HOPE scholarship and it was close, yet far. My dad just wanted me to be happy with my selection. The only stipulation they had was that if I moved out it had to be into university housing. I went on four college visits and the first three schools had similar dorms, then I came to STATE, the dorms looked like apartments. As much as I love being around people, I actually enjoy having “me time”. STATE offers apartment style dorms! I had my own room as opposed to sharing a room with two other people.
Initially I wanted to go to a Historically Black College but then I thought about myself and the atmosphere and I figured that wasn’t my best option. I enjoy being around people from different cultures, backgrounds, and ethnicities and I knew I wouldn’t get that variety at an HBC; so immediately two of my options were eliminated. The final deciding factor was the location of the universities. One was in a very small college town, another was in a ultimate college town, one was in the middle of nowhere, and the last was in the big city, in ATLANTA!!! Yet, again Georgia State was still on my list.
I applied to three different schools because my high school counselor recommended it. I was accepted into all three of them and I chose Georgia State. I have been here at STATE for two years and I have no regrets about my selection. I am elated that I came here, I think that had I gone somewhere else I wouldn’t be as happy. I know that I made the best decision possible for myself. This was the best selection possible as my institution of higher learning. I’m here, when are you coming?!
